Hibernators
January 18, 2013
It was a clear black night / a clear white moon / Nap Squad was on the streets / tryin’ to snooze…
Heads droppin’ like felons / it’s a tad bit late / Snoozy Scrambla’ and N.A.P.P.A. had to hibernate…
As “My Dreams are Lucid” is entering it’s 6th consecutive week at the top of the charts, it seemed only fitting to give a little preview of the Nap Squad’s forthcoming single, “Hibernators”, due out some time in the coming months.
While this track incubates in the production studio, however, I would like to tide all of the loyal JYC followers over with this great song by HAIM (a group of three sisters that play guitar/bass/keys and collectively sing), who some people have compared to a new-age Fleetwood Mac, entitled “Don’t Save Me”. Thanks to GFonda for the recommendation.

Upon hearing this song and watching this video for the first time, I felt like the professional athlete who has just won the championship in his sport and just “can’t put his feelings into words”. Now, perhaps as a means of coming to grips with the fact that I’ll never be a professional athlete (despite catching hundreds of TD passes from the life-size Troy Aikman beanbag I played backyard football with growing up), I am just trying to relate my everyday life to the inexplicable highs these guys experience on a regular basis – or, maybe that feeling I described really is possible for anyone? Why am I getting so sentimental? Must be the Homecoming Weekend nostalgia talking…
Anyway, as a service to all my Junkyard Cat readers, I’m still going to attempt to describe what makes this song so awesome. It’s a mashup (I know what you’re thinking… give it a chance) of Adele’s “Set Fire to the Rain” and Daft Punk’s “Something About You”, and it purposefully combines the explosive crescendos and raw intensity of Adele’s voice with one of Daft Punk’s most subdued beats; the result is a stunning soup du jour (I feel like I’m sounding a little too much like Sir Herbert Sherpa today…) that has inspired its very own video. That’s right, a video produced exclusively for the purposes of accompanying a mashup. And the video is just as awesome as the song itself.
I hope this song treats all you road dogs well this weekend. Be safe out there, and until next time…
SHAQ ATTACK
September 11, 2012
Last weekend at Budweiser’s Made in America Festival in Philly, Jay-Z aka HOVA aka Jigga brought rap BACK for me. I haven’t felt this way about rap since taking my shirt off at middle school dances and following Petey Pablo’s instructions to “twist it ’round yo head spin it like a helicopter”. All cities remix was nothing short of revolutionary.
This brand new jam from Jigga, Yeezy and Big Sean is also revolutionary in a way – I’ve never had headphones actually vibrate off of my ears like they do when this song is pumped at max volume. Speaking of pumps and middle school, thought I’d throw up a pic of the SHAQ pumps I used to rock in middle school… nothing like a little suburban kid with marginal basketball talent decked out in all black sneaks. To a great era, and to G.O.O.D. music bringing it back, HIT IT:

Followers of the JYC –
As I prepare to embark on a journey to the center of the earth (I sincerely hope that my own adventure does not star Brendan Fraser in any way), a.k.a. Myanmar, I thought it fitting to leave behind some sort of indelible mark to tide listeners over until my return.
Sometimes, all you need to make a song great is a beat. Anyone who’s ever heard the album “About a Beat” by the Park City Collaborative already knows this. Today’s post/song gives you that beat and more. Mixing tribal rhythms with new-age house sounds and chanting vocals, this song brings together the best of several cutures, past and present. It’s fitting for the occasion, and I hope you enjoy. See you on the other side…

After much deliberation over what song to endow upon all of the Junkyard Cat’s loyal followers this week, I finally decided on a tune that doesn’t stray too far from the JYC’s roots… After all, a junkyard cat is already about as stray as they come, so why push it?

Alright party people, no time for making chit-chat.
Here’s something quick to help you get over that “2:30 feeling” you might be having right about now. I know I sure did, until just throwing back a nice lil’ shot of 5-hour ENERGY… nothing like 8333% of your daily Vitamin B12 to really get you going.
This song reminds me of something that old-school Fatboy Slim would produce, except that it’s updated with a big, modern club beat and infused with some spicy latin flavor (think PEPPAR VODKA).
Song premiered about 7 months ago on BBC’s Radio One, and there is still not a full-length official version out. But that’s about to change. Be sure to get the full download (I’ll repost here) when the song drops on February 20th… until then, here’s:

Inspector… Who?

It’s Friday again, and although that does mean bumping Katy Perry’s “Friday Night” on repeat while grinding out the last few hours of the week as a full-time desk jockey, it also means that it’s time for some new Junkyard Cat material – this particular song might just become the soundtrack to your weekend.
It starts out with a downbeat/upbeat pattern that’s perfectly reminiscent of “Smalltown Boy” by the Bronski Beat (shouts out Bilzo)… by reminiscent, I mean it falls somewhere in between vaguely familiar and the full-blown Vanilla Ice rip of the classic Queen/Bowie hit, “Under Pressure”.
It then moves into a grooving rhythm that I think is best described by the word “squelch”. Open to suggestions on that one, though. If any of you know my man Face, you should have seen the way he wiggled to this jam as soon as I threw it on. And once he popped, he just couldn’t stop.
Singing off with a big thank you to all of the readers out – keep on doing what your doing, and don’t change a thing. Until next time…

Let Sleeping Cats Lie
January 27, 2012
The Junkyard Cat has been sleeping, hibernating, zZZZzZzzzZ-ing for a while now… but like the great Austin Powers who cryogenically froze himself for decades to protect the world from Dr. Evil (cue the pinky raise), The Junkyard Cat has not lost its mojo, baby.
Since when did it get to be 2012? Having not posted since 2010, a lot has changed. Another super-villain by the name of Kim Dotcom was recently arrested in New Zealand, and that means no more uploading of mp3 files directly to this site (sigh). Oh well, YouTube videos will have to do for now. By the way, who is this Kim Dotcom character anyway? I strongly encourage you to read the Wikipedia page on him (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kim_Dotcom) and form your own opinion… it seems to me that he is a mix of, well, Dr. Evil, and a modern-day Carmen San Diego.
Anyway, here’s a jam that’s been keeping the DUBSPOT happy for a few weeks now… great tune, found on NPR’s “Best of 2011” list. Hope you all enjoy, and to all the JYC readers out there, be safe this weekend.

Bonus Points for Originality

I can’t get enough of this song lately… It has such a unique sound to it. Mixing electro, 80s pop, post-punk, and beautiful vocals, you might find yourself lulled to sleep temporarily while listening to “Running up that Hill” by the Chromatics, but all at once you will become conscious again and realize that the song has morphed into something totally different. It’s driving, it’s heady, and the steady guitar is downright groovy. Enjoy.
